We create digital products such as apps and games to fund the social movements we believe in.
The products that we make will themselves likely not bring about change. Rather, it is the money they generate that we are hoping will make a lasting difference.
That is what an organism does!
An organism is a new-ish form of organisation that we are trying to establish.
Organisms operate like a combination of a regular for-profit business and a non-profit organisation. They generate funds by producing or selling goods/services with the aim of generating a surplus. But instead of the surplus going to shareholders, it is either reinvested in the organisation or is donated to a social cause.
This approach allows socially ambitious founders to start whatever kind of business that they want while contributing to the causes they are passionate about.
Even though we decided to call ourselves “organism.1”, as if we are the first of our kind, we know there are a lot of organisations with similar structures out there. But since we would like to see more organisms around, we decided to do what we can to inspire others to follow a similar path. And once we are off the ground, we hope to be able to help fund and nurture other newly born organisms as well.
Regardless of how much effort we put in to protest, organise and rally. The unfortunate reality is that for every action that we take, the opposite side is doing much of the same, although often with much more funding. Ultimately, depending on the way the wind is blowing on election day, we can end up with yet another government that maintains the status quo, hindering necessary progress.
While traditional activism still of course is worthwhile, this led us to think about how can we bring about change with less obstacles in our way.
We realised two things:
These realisations are what led us to create the organism organisation structure and to found organism.1. Through these initiatives we hope to enable long-lasting systemic change, by leveraging the mechanisms of the existing economic framework.
As of the writing moment (26/06/24), we are not currently generating a surplus, and therefore we have some time before we have to decide on the first social causes that we would like to support.
With that said, as an organisation we are very much influenced by the principle of social equality as well as the ideas of socialism and effective altruism. We will write a blog post that goes further into depths about this soon.
